Snapchat: get back in or close for good
What Snapchat itself says, in plain words. We link to every source. Platform rules change, so check the link before you act. This is not legal advice.
First: do you still have the email address or phone number on the account? If you do, getting back in is usually much easier.
Get back in
- Snapchat says: "In order to access your account, you'll need access to your email or mobile number to reset your password." (Source: Snapchat Support. Checked 25 October 2026.)
- Password reset: go to accounts.snapchat.com, choose Forgot Password, and get a one-time code by phone or email. (Source: Snapchat Support. Checked 25 October 2026.)
What to do depends on the problem:
- If your account is temporarily locked: go to accounts.snapchat.com, then choose Unlock.
- If your account was hacked: use the Snapchat Support Bot. Give an email address you can get into.
- If there were too many login attempts: wait 48 hours.
Close it for good
- Log in at accounts.snapchat.com and choose Delete My Account. Your account is deactivated for 30 days. It is then deleted after 30 more days. (Source: Snapchat Support. Checked 25 October 2026.)
- You can reactivate only within 30 days, by logging in. "Snapchat Support cannot reactivate it for you." If you do not download your data in the first 30 days, it is deleted after 60 days. (Source: Snapchat Support. Checked 25 October 2026.)
Download your data first
- Log in at accounts.snapchat.com. Go to My Data, choose the dates, then Submit. You get a link by email. (Source: Snapchat Support. Checked 25 October 2026.)
If the person has died
- Snapchat says: "Our privacy policies do not allow us to grant access". It accepts requests only "from a verified email address associated with the Snapchatter's account". (Source: Snapchat Support. Checked 25 October 2026.)
Your username after deletion
- You can change your username once every 12 months. It must be 3 to 15 characters. Snapchat does not say whether a deleted username is released. (Source: Snapchat Support. Checked 25 October 2026.)
Privacy contact, for letters
- Snap Inc. is the controller for UK users. Email: dpo@snap.com. (Source: Snap Privacy Notice. Checked 25 October 2026.)
