Microsoft: get back in or close for good
What Microsoft itself says, in plain words. We link to every source. Platform rules change, so check the link before you act. This is not legal advice.
First: do you still have the email address or phone number on the account? If you do, getting back in is usually much easier.
Get back in
- Use the recovery form at account.live.com/acsr. If two-step verification is on and you have lost every method, Microsoft says it cannot help. (Source: Microsoft Support. Checked 25 October 2026.)
- Sign in at least once every two years. Accounts locked for over two years are also closed. (Source: Microsoft Support. Checked 25 October 2026.)
Close it for good
- Microsoft says: "To close an account, you'll need to be able to sign in." You choose a 30 or 60 day window to reopen it. (Source: Microsoft Support. Checked 25 October 2026.)
- Important: if you reset all your security details, you must wait 60 days before you can close the account. (Source: Microsoft Support. Checked 25 October 2026.)
- To reopen: sign in within the 30 or 60 day window and enter a security code. (Source: Microsoft Support. Checked 25 October 2026.)
Download your data first
- Use the privacy dashboard while signed in. (Source: Microsoft Privacy Statement. Checked 25 October 2026.)
If the person has died
- You do not need to tell Microsoft. The account closes after two years without use. Outlook.com and OneDrive are frozen after 1 year. (Source: Microsoft Support. Checked 25 October 2026.)
- Content is released only with a valid court order or subpoena. In Europe this is served on Microsoft Ireland Operations Ltd, 70 Sir John Rogerson's Quay, Dublin 2. (Source: Microsoft Support. Checked 25 October 2026.)
Your username after deletion
- Not stated by the platform in the pages we checked.
Privacy contact, for letters
- Contact the Data Protection Officer through aka.ms/privacyresponse. Microsoft says it replies within 30 days. (Sources: Microsoft Privacy Statement and Microsoft privacy requests. Checked 25 October 2026.)
- Post: Microsoft Ireland Operations Limited, Attn: Data Protection Officer, One Microsoft Place, South County Business Park, Leopardstown, Dublin 18, Ireland. Phone +353 1 706 3117. (Source: Microsoft Privacy Statement. Checked 25 October 2026.)
